Viking Octantis | Antarctica

Overview

Viking brings a modern, science‑focused approach to expedition travel.

Viking is a premium expedition operator known for its refined Scandinavian design and a strong commitment to science‑led exploration. Their ships are purpose‑built for discovery, combining advanced technology with understated elegance. Interiors reflect a modern Nordic aesthetic, with clean lines, natural materials and a focus on light and views.

Their expedition programme blends comfort with meaningful fieldwork, supported by resident scientists, onboard laboratories and a wide range of specialist equipment. Viking’s approach is designed for curious travellers who want to explore the polar regions and remote coastlines while engaging with real research and expert‑led enrichment.

My experience with Viking spans two expedition voyages: a press trip to Canada on the Canadian Discovery itinerary aboard Viking Polaris and a PR‑invited voyage to Antarctica on the Antarctic Explorer itinerary aboard Viking Octantis. Together, they gave me a strong sense of Viking’s refined onboard atmosphere and its thoughtful, guest‑focused approach to expedition travel.

The hub for the expedition team to consult with guests on their daily activities, Expedition Central offers one‑to‑one guidance supported by 3D‑printed maps, digital displays and a state‑of‑the‑art spatial data visualisation chart table. It’s the place to explore route options, understand landing plans and gain deeper context about the regions visited.

The Studio

This multipurpose space hosts enrichment sessions with Viking’s Resident Scientists. Felt replicas of key avian species line the walls, helping guests learn to identify birds and understand their behaviours.
